How do we form our ideas of masculinity? To answer this I turned to my past - digging through childhood tapes, revisiting films and TV shows that shaped me and uncovering my father’s old VHS recordings. These fragments of memory, however, proved to be fragile, subjective and incomplete.
The selection was dictated by chance - the tapes available, the scenes I chose to watch or skip and the deterioration of the material itself. My personal archive stopped when my father left our home and there is a striking absence of footage from my teenage years, a time when I refused to be filmed.
Inspired by Arthur Jafa’s Love is the Message, the Message is Death, this film assembles a cascade of images - personal and cultural, remembered and lost - blurring time and space. It is not a definitive statement but a splinter of thought, an open-ended meditation on how masculinity is constructed and remembered.
